Dialysis is also known as renal replacement therapy for those living with end-state renal disease (ESRD). A dialysis center allows individuals in need of hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis to obtain treatment in a clinical setting. For the most part dialysis centers have a medical director who is a trained Nephrologist that specializes in kidney disease overseeing the facility along with dialysis nurses and a social worker. The social worker at the facility assists in coordinating transportation to and from the facility and providing patients with additional supportive services. All dialysis centers are reviewed by a state surveyor to help ensure patient safety and oversee quality of care. Medicare and Medicaid pay much of the cost of kidney failure treatment.
